The Island of Forgotten Diseases

This sounds like pretty much the worst place in the entire world.

On the desolate central Asian island of Vozrozhdeniye – or Vozrozhdeniya – near the south rim of the shrinking Aral Sea, you'll find "the remains of the world's largest biological-warfare testing ground."

As The New York Times reported back in 2002, for nearly four decades Vozrozhdeniye Island was "a practice field for the most hideous kind of warfare."

The whole site is now abandoned.

This is the stuff of horror stories but the real horror of it is that it is real.  Geoff Manaugh has done a superb job on this piece - it could well be the start of a novel on it's own.  Somehow I think we will hear much more about this 'island of forgotten diseases' in the near future.  Thanks Kate.  I'm glad to know about it.
