The British Daily Mirror newspaper, which is one of the highest
circulating newspapers in the UK, showered Istanbul with praise. The
daily’s news article wrote, “Istanbul was a metropolitan while London
was a town,” and that Istanbul was the centre of the known world for
more than a century.

British tabloid newspaper Daily Mirror
said Istanbul holds a very important place in European history. The
news article written by Iain Mayhew wrote, “One should do a bit of
homework on Istanbul” before visiting it. “In the 15th century, when
London was just a small town of barely more than 50,000 people,
Constantinople - by then capital of an Ottoman Empire which stretched
from Austria to Egypt - had a population of more than a million, the
Western world's largest city.” the news article wrote.

Mayhew
noted that he was writing the article from the Maiden’s Tower in the
middle of the Bosphorus, “which, at various stages in its centuries-old
career, has been a lighthouse, a fortress, a customs house and the
hideout of evil Elektra in the Bond movie The World Is Not Enough.”. It
was also said the city is a very modern place.

“There is
Europe on my left and Asia on my right. Istanbul is four hours away
from London and is an excellent place to visit at the weekend”, Mayhew
wrote.

Mayhew noted that visiting Topkapi Palace, the
Hippodrome region, Hagia Sophia, and Museum of Turkish-Islamic Arts in
Istanbul was an absolute must.
