Earlier on Monday, thousands of people gathered at Catania cathedral in Sicily for the funeral of police officer Filippo Raciti.

Mr Raciti was killed outside the city's Massimino stadium following a match against a nearby rival team from Palermo.

Although he was initially believed to have died when a homemade bomb was hurled into his vehicle, a post-mortem revealed that a blow from a blunt object caused the injuries which killed him.

I think the lockout is a horrible idea.  Look at the Roman "derby" Lazio-Roma last year.  It was weird watching a soccer game with 0 spectators in the stands.  Paolo Maldini of Milan was right in coming out against it.  Nobody in Italy wants to see this, even if the death of the agent should be punished severely.

I think I agree.  I am just not sure what you would do to curb the problem of fan violence in the stadiums.  It sounds like this incident will push Italy to actually deal with the problem, perhaps using the British model to prevent such incidents.  But the image of people playing a match with no one watching in the stands is so eerie!
