Candis Cayne during Fleet Week

NYC's women (and a healthy chunk of the city's men) have been eagerly awaiting the start of Fleet Week today, when the Navy comes to town and Manhattan is inundated with cheerful, polite, decidedly un-New Yorkish sailors.

Hosted nearly every year since 1984, Fleet Week New York is the City's celebration of the sea services. This annual event also provides an opportunity for the citizens of New York City and the surrounding Tri-State area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness first hand the latest capabilities of today's Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Team.Sailors enjoy a lighter moment while walking in Times Square during Fleet Week New York 2006.

Fleet Week includes dozens of military demonstrations and displays throughout the week, as well as public visitation of many of the participating ships.

Additionally, last year 95,000 guests enjoyed visiting the ships, meeting their crews, and learning about their technology.

Brian, I remember seeing Fleet Week for the first time: it was surreal. Uniforms started out impossibly white, but by the end of a day in Midtown they'd be just a tiny bit greyer. In the meantime, we get to see that our armed forces are made up of people, and not just little Risk gamepieces getting moved around on a map. Good stuff.
