About Jay Rosen
Jay Rosen teaches Journalism at New York University, where has been on the faculty since 1986. From 1999 to 2005 he served as chair of the Department. He lives in New York City.
Rosen is the author of PressThink, a weblog about journalism and its ordeals (www.pressthink.org), which he introduced in September 2003. In June 2005, PressThink won the Reporters Without Borders 2005 Freedom Blog award for outstanding defense of free expression. In April 2007 PressThink recorded its two millionth visit.
He also blogs at the Huffington Post. In July 2006 he announced the debut of NewAssignment.Net, his experimental site for pro-am, open source reporting projects. The first one was called Assignment Zero, a collaboration with Wired.com. A second project is OfftheBus.Net with the Huffington Post. A third was introduced in November 2007: beatblogging.org ("Follow along as 13 reporters build social networks into their beats.")
Rosen is also a member of the Wikipedia Advisory Board.
In 1999, Yale University Press published his book, What Are Journalists For?, which is about the rise of the civic journalism movement. Rosen wrote and spoke frequently about civic journalism (also called public journalism) from 1989-99. From 1993 to 1997 he was the director of the Project on Public Life and the Press, funded by the Knight Foundation.
As a press critic and reviewer, he has published in The Nation, Columbia Journalism Review, the Chronicle of Higher Education, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Newsday and others. Online he has written for Salon.com, TomPaine.com and Poynter.org.

Quoting @kitson, "Naïve of me to think it was so they could mentor reporters?" Uh, yeah a bit. The classic http://www.jstor.org/pss/2573002

I'm getting good use out of Twitter Times: http://twittertim.es/jayrosen_nyu Helps me make sure I'm not missing anything.

@gmarkham Overlooked often is that modern newsrooms were designed for editors to control reporters; if fewer controls are needed, then...?

Hmmm. @digiphile says #20 on my list http://jr.ly/nn8n might be sports teams that hire beat reporters to cover them. Is that "PR" or news?

A tip from @berendjan and "lead generation" moves from a note to # 19 in my list, "sources of subsidy for news." http://jr.ly/nn8n Got # 20?

This is exactly right, @stevenjayl. http://jr.ly/wpcq. “Say Everything” is the best book ever written about blogging.

Acquiring the background knowledge is expensive, @drgrist. He said, she said is action on the cost side http://jr.ly/nnau

I don't get the argument @mashable: it's futile, but it's dangerous. Won't work but it should be halted http://jr.ly/pti9

@billdinTO Fill in anyone you meant with your "pro Cit J" weasel words: You're for intellectual honesty. They're for the home team. Right?
jayrosen_nyu updated Twitter @ 09:19 pm, Nov 25/09
@billdinTO Right, Bill. You're for intellectual honesty. I'm for the home team.
jayrosen_nyu updated Twitter @ 09:05 pm, Nov 25/09
@billdinTO Well, there you are. The lonely truthteller, standing between teams of ideologues who select the facts to fit preconceived views.
jayrosen_nyu updated Twitter @ 08:59 pm, Nov 25/09
@billdinTO Yes, Bill. You question and probe and we-the "pro Cit J" team- just cheer if it's for our side and boo if it's the wrong team.
jayrosen_nyu updated Twitter @ 08:51 pm, Nov 25/09
@billdinTO We're all captives of groupthink and you are going to debunk us. That's thinking like a journalist, yes. In the negative sense.
jayrosen_nyu updated Twitter @ 08:34 pm, Nov 25/09
@billdinTO Debunk us, baby.

Watching a C-SPAN forum with both, I just cannot fathom how Jeff Zeleny of the NY Times doesn't ask Steve Smith about http://bit.ly/4Xk7BS
