.... to go back into the water! Well, in this case, the water was the best place for this stranded, young shark. A Coney Island lifeguard, Marisu Mironescu, 39, spotted the two foot sand shark, who had made his way onto the beach, attracting a crowd of 75 to 100 people. It was being held, with others hitting the animal in the face.
The lifeguard grabbed the small shark, dubbed Jaws Jr. by the city Parks Commissioner, swam out into the water and released the shark out at sea, saying,
"Well, I wasn't going to let them hurt the poor thing.".

Karen,
I found your story rather amusing.
as much as I love animals` one can`t help but wonder What will this " do gooder " think if this Baby Shark later becomes a " Man Eater " and maybe takes it`s revenge on someone else !.
All the same` it is great to see that some Fellow Humans do still care about such animals.
Great story.

That any creature could survive straining the water around Coney Island through its gills is quite amazing! I'm a huge fan of the shark, even in light of learning to surf in an area known for the occasional Great White encounter...
I was lucky enough to visit the Natal Sharks Board, where I got to witness a shark autopsy (smells like a huge dead fish, funny enough, and they eat the darndest things) and learn all sorts of new things about these amazing creatures, only a tiny, tiny fraction of whom have ever harmed people. It was like being a kid again. Only with sharks.
