We all know that YouTube has the ability to launch someone into stardom--take LonelyGirl15, or the Bridezilla...or that kid that's just really, really good at guitar. But when I stumbled across Katey's Firearm Facts and the whole series of YouTube videos in which Katey is the star, I just had to dig deeper.

Turns out this popular video set stars 13-year-old Katey Montague, daughter of anti-gun control advocate and gunsmith Bruce Montague, an Ontario native who's court battle against Bill C-68 (a Canadian gun registry bill) has been much publicized and is set to go to court in March. We'll watch for what happens next, but in the meantime, here's an interview I did with Katey about the videos and her role in them.

Katey's Firearm Facts is below, and you can watch the entire set here.

How did you get involved in the videos?

Katey Montague: I'm in drama at school and at the Free Methodist Church in Dryden, Ontario. My dad directs the church youth plays, and my brothers have always been into drama as well. Our friend Chris DeArmani [a vocal advocate of Bruce's and member of his case management team] decided the videos would be good publicity and asked me to do them. I want to be an actress so I thought it would be good practice.

Can you outline gun control legislation as you understand it?

KM: I don't know much about the laws, but I do know that gun owners or hunters aren't the problem, criminals are. Law abiding citizens shouldn't be punished for crimes they didn't commit, and there are too many loopholes in the laws to protect law abiding people like my dad. They shouldn't be bugging regular gun owners. They should go after criminals.

Do you own your own gun?

I don't. I used to target shoot, but the government took all of our guns away [Bruce was arrested in September of 2004 for violating the terms of Bill C-68 and jailed for 11
days. Police confiscated the Montague family’s guns and other items in an
ensuing search of their home].

Do you remember your father's arrest?

KM: [Long pause; Katey is crying] I was with him at the gun show, and these policemen just came up and
took him, it was scary. I was alone with him. He was gone for a while and we
didn’t know when he’d be back, and we had to talk to him through glass. It was
scary.

Do you think the videos have helped your dad’s cause at all?

KM: We’ve had a lot of phone calls and donations as a result, so yeah I
think they have.

Are there plans to make more videos?

Chris [DeArmani] has written a bunch more scripts, I think there are sixty
of them, that he wants to start working on. I’m pretty excited.

Anything else you want to say about the videos or your dad’s case?

Just that they need to get rid of stupid laws. My dad never hurt anyone.

Katey Montague is crazy gun-nut who would shoot normal everyday people just for the sake of her "protecting my rights!" Well everyone has the RIGHT to be alive! Crazy people like Katey shouldnt be allowed to own guns, because theres no good coming from weapons! Weapons are ment for killing, not protecting! I hope Katey Montague gets shot herself one day, then hopefully she will understand how stupid guns are! Cant wait to see Katey Montague shoot a 84 year old men, just because she was "protecting her rights." You get the idea how immature Kateys pro-gun propaganda is, right?!

I just want to point out how absolutely ridiculous that comment from December is.  Yes just because someone believes that the gun registration law is completely unnecessary does not mean that they are crazy and are going to go around shooting people. Honestly that is a ridiculous statement.  I agree that the gun registration is unnecessary, does that mean that I too am going to go out and start shooting people?

I agree with what Katey is doing, and I wish her the best of luck. As for the comment above from Christoph Deese, I think wishing harm or death upon a young girl because she has an opinion is truly disturbing. It's no wonder Christoph believes in gun control. Those who want to see innocent people get shot, don't want the victims to fight back. Hopefully there will be justice and her family can get their home back.
