Having run three marathons and volunteered at another two, this year I decided to visit my home city marathon purely for the spectacle and enjoyment. Additionally, having recently upgraded to a new Digital SLR, the Nikon D200, I was keen to just have some fun, take some shots and encourage the runners on their way.

My marathon began at the starting line in Greenwich and before I knew it I had run/walked the first 6 miles! I was so captivated by the adrenalin rush of seeing these brave runners dressed up in all sorts of regalia and each no doubt with their own story to tell about what compelled them to take part in one of the greatest physical challenges known to man.

The most incredible sight that I witnessed was that of marathon veteran Lloyd Scott dressed up as Indiana Jones and pulling a 200lbs stone along the 26.2 miles . Lloyd was a former professional soccer goalkeeper who went on to become a fireman. He developed leukemia as a result of inhaling too much smoke whilst rescuing two girls from a fire. He was given a 10% chance of living but he has never looked back since and has completed several marathons in unique fancy dress such as in a deep sea diving costume and dressed as St George whilst pulling along a huge dragon. He finished Sunday's race on Monday morning, 22 hours later! Whatever next for this inspirational man?

If you have never been to a marathon, go along and see it, it will be a day for you to remember for a very long time. Maybe it will inspire you to try it and raise money for a cause that has always been at the back of your mind.
