Animal rights activists may finally be winning the war on inhumane pigeon control methods. While pigeon/rock dove droppings have been proven to corrode mortar and metal, and carry such diseases as meningitis, toxoplasmosis and salmonella, it's been exceedingly hard to get cities and citizens to agree on what methods are effective as well as humane.
On university grounds in Nova Scotia, Canada, it wasn't rare to see a hawker overseeing the natural, if sometimes bloody, business of controlling the pigeon population nesting in the historic buildings of campus. Apartment buildings use bird netting to enclose balconies all across North America, and churches worldwide are adorned with metal spike crowns, all to encourage the pigeons to look elsewhere for nesting grounds. Some of these spike strips even include electrical wiring.
While discussed for years, it is Hollywood California that will lead into the world of pigeon birth control.
OvoControl P, which interferes with egg development, will be put in bird food in new rooftop feeders in Hollywood.
The pilot program is expected to show results within a year.
