Phase out fossil fuels, replace with clean energy

January 04, 2007

We want to call attention to a concern about projects like the Desert Rock Power Plant and the Black Mesa slurry line that isn't getting the attention it deserves: Global warming.

Every time we choose to keep using coal or oil instead of clean sources like sun or wind, we contribute that much more to global warming. Whether Desert Rock, the Black Mesa Project, and other fossil fuel developments go ahead or not, residents of Navajoland would benefit if the Navajo Nation government would start planning to phase out fossil fuels as sources of revenue and energy for the Navajo Nation and replace them with clean energy.

Many residents of Navajoland probably want to learn more about clean energy. What technology is available now? What is actually working and where? One source of information is the Apollo Alliance website (www.apolloalliance.org).

And why not have the Navajo Nation government (NNEPA, perhaps teaming with grassroots Navajo environmental organizations) sponsor a public meeting about clean energy and Navajoland?
