NP Rank:
IS CAFFEINE OUR ONLY WAY OUT?
Each morning SFU students and advisors are greeted by the alluring yet dangerous aroma of freshly brewed coffee; is caffeine our only way out? As we watch first years innocently scurrying away to their classes, we wonder; when will they be sucked into this malicious epidemic, in which we are already victims of?
Whether its herbal tea or simply coffee beans, SFU students have found themselves captivated by the stimulants of a substance known as caffeine. The way it turns dark gloomy days into utopia, or how it manages to make one’s lip curve by its lingering scent is all in the magic of caffeine.
In this epidemic, caffeine has become an essential part of every-day life; whether it’s studying, or finishing up some over-due homework, caffeine has proven itself to be a necessity rather an option. Even in our worse times, when we are in the process of late night cramming, or even- what some of us do- early morning cramming, we find ourselves side-by-side and hand-in-hand with what seems to be, our only reliable friend. Not only does it help us get through those university-life threatening assignments without pulling out our hair, or what’s left of it; it also helps us survive our lectures. Remember what those long, hefty lectures were like without caffeine? Words could no longer be recognized as words; they became merely a string of high and low pitch sounds which would go through one ear, and out the other. Even the ceiling became an abstract of art. Do we really want to go through that again? An additional luxury of this epidemic is the increased chance of scoring a date with one of SFU’s attractive baristas; who are hopefully single and ready to mingle. Who would not want a reliable and loyal friend, who is also a catch with the ladies and gentlemen? Exactly!
Eventually, we are drawn deeper and deeper into this epidemic. Soon after, caffeine will become our light, our air and essentially, our only weapon against the next years we will face in University.
