Sept 20 (Reuters) - A vault in a mountainside cavern on Spitsbergen island around 1,000 km (600 miles) from the North Pole is being prepared to store the world's crop seeds in case of disaster.

steve468, thanks for sharing this. Can you flesh it out a little? Maybe some detail on why this interested you, and why this particular location is being chosen...who chose it...etc. If you know this info, we'd like to know, too!

Excellent! Now if there is a cataclysmic event, the 5 people in the area of this vault will be safe!

Actually this is old news, reported on months ago on one of the broadcast network's news magazines. I cannot recall which one, but I do remember the story. I sometimes wonder why the wire services recycle old news. Perhaps to keep in in the public eye?
Nonetheless, thanks for highlighting it.
