Japanese staff get paid "heartache leave"
A Japanese firm is allowing scorned lovers to lick their emotional wounds on company time.
To me the funniest thing about this idea is the graduatedness of it--you get more days off the older you are.
Maybe the policy is not as silly as it sounds. If I'm 70 and my sweetheart dumps me, I'm guessing I'd need a few years at least. When I was thirteen, I'd forget her name after math.
TOKYO (Reuters) - Lovelorn staff at a Japanese marketing company can take paid time off after a bad break-up with a partner, with more "heartache leave" on offer as they get older.Tokyo-based Hime & Company, which also gives staff paid time off to hit the shops during sales season, says heartache leave allows staff to cry themselves out and return to work refreshed. "Not everyone needs to take maternity leave but with heartbreak, everyone needs time off, just like when you get sick," CEO Miki Hiradate, whose company of six women markets cosmetics and other goods targeted for women, told Reuters by telephone.
Staff aged 24 years or younger can take one day off per year, while those between 25 and 29 can take two days off and those older can take three days off, the company said.
"Women in their 20s can find their next love quickly, but it's tougher for women in their 30s, and their break-ups tend to be more serious," Hiradate said.

Most companies in North America offer 'personal days' at about the same rate... used for this purpose, I'm sure it also cuts down on office place reboun... uh, I mean romances, thus ending an annoying cycle. Leave it to Japanese culture to be blunt about it all! I love it!

Hello Rob,
Where was this before I was married? If I'd been working for them, do you know how much back leave I'd be owed by now?
Personally, I think it's a good idea - people still feel just terrible the day after a break-up. Yes, Good Stuff!

I think it's kind of sweet. The idea that you get more time with age is pretty funny.
