Pittsburgh resident Russell Byars will now find his name permantly etched into the history of obscure stupid human tricks - he succesfully skipped a stone 51 times across a watery surface.

Mr Byars, known as "Rock Bottom" by his fellow stone-throwing
aficionados, smashed the record at French Creek on the Allegheny River,
about 70 miles north of Pittsburgh, with a prodigious effort which he
estimated travelled 250 feet (76 metres).
"I actually threw 40 stones that day, but that was the first skip that I threw," Byars told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which confirmed the record with Guinness officials.

The old record, set in 2002, was held by Kurt Steiner, 42, of Emporium.

“She said, ‘well you can win fudge’, so I was like ‘sign me up’,” Mr Byars said.

He also said that a lot goes into his technique.

“I think mainly it’s just getting it down flat and putting a lot of spin on it, and the speed of course is important.”

ScienceDave, I like this one. Unbelievable video clip. Beats my personal best of 9, hands down. This is what I like about digital news -  a fun story backed up with a video clip. Good stuff.

Heh -- I think my record is 4 skips...I blame my left-handedness for that, though.

I like how he was motivated by a sweet tooth.
