We can all sigh a gasp of relief. The ever-patriotic, blue-leotarded superhero that Marvel killed off last year isn't all that dead.
In this week's Captain America #34, we learn the superhero's old buddy, Bucky Barnes, is to don the patriotic shield for a while--presumably until they decide to kill him off too.
I haven't read the issue, but so far the buzz is positive:
Arriving in stores today, Captain America #34 introduces the world to a new Captain America —but just who’s behind the mask? The Eisner award-winning creative team of writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting, joined by special variant cover artist (and industry legend) Alex Ross, present the beginning of a new era that has everyone from The Colbert Report to NPR buzzing!
Captain America's alter-ego, Steve Rogers, is still resting in peace at Arlington National Cemetery, having been done in by assassins last March. But his good buddy and sidekick from the 1940s, Bucky Barnes, has picked up the bulletproof Captain America shield, put on a new uniform and taken his place.
Simply put, 34 issues in and I know with absolute certainty that I will remember Ed Brubaker's run on Captain America no matter what lies ahead. It is a modern classic. The issue that hits stores tomorrow is the perfect example of why that is true. With precision, Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting are weaving an absolutely epic storyline that never escapes the realm of street-level comic book plausibility.
