Global warming exposes millions to health risks
Gulf Daily News
NUSA DUA, Indonesia: Millions more
people will be at risk from illnesses such as malaria and diarrhoea
in warming world beset by heatwave and water shortages, the WHO said
yesterday.
Climate experts say rising temperatures
and heatwave will increase the number of heat-related deaths, while
higher ozone levels from pollution will mean more people suffering
from cardio-respiratory disease.
A warming world would also mean the
spread of vector-borne and pathogenic diseases such as malaria,
dengue fever and cholera.
“Some of the major killers are
climate sensitive,” Maria Neira, the WHO's director for public
health and the environment, said at climate talks in Bali.
“We are concerned about malnutrition
related to lack of agricultural production, we are concerned about
diarrhoea due to water scarcity and sanitation, and about seeing an
increase in dengue and malaria and their appearance in areas where it
was not present,” she said.
“The health costs of inaction will be
the incidence of injuries and death by natural disasters and heat
waves or displacement of people.”
Neira told the climate talks on the
Indonesian resort island of Bali a 1 degree Celsius increase in
temperature would lead to an eight per cent increase in the incidence
of diarrhoea.
Climate change was also expected to
increase the proportion of the global population exposed to dengue, a
disease carried by mosquitoes, by between 50-60pc.
In the past, experts have said South
Asia is particularly at risk.
The region's flood-prone, low-lying
countries such as Bangladesh, melting Himalayan glaciers, desert
areas and large coastal cities mean disease could spread quickly and
exacerbate malnutrition.
“The health system will be totally
overwhelmed and not able to respond and maybe undermine the health
benefits until now,”said Neira.
Beijing - China will have exploited
all available water supplies to the limit by 2030, the government has
warned, ordering officials to prepare for worse to come as global
warming and economic expansion
drain lakes and rivers.
As well, a state newspaper warned on
Friday that drought next year could hit crops and stroke already
heady inflation.
China's surface and underground water
supplies are under strain from feverish economic growth and a
population passing 1.3 billion. And scarcity will worsen with global
warming...
Our concern for “Mother Earth” is
the growing response of the feminine side in each of us. Everything
is linked to everything else.
It is the growing intuitive perception
that we are living in a Global Whole, this inner push will
ultimately save us all.
At the core, the cause of an ill –
Mother Earth has to be found in an “apparent failure” in
developing personal and social evolution: Education on all levels.
There is no such thing as failure;
there can only be loss of time.
The “sense of time” produce glamour
and disappointment, whereas, the work goes truly forward and a lesson
learnt by failure acts as a safeguard for the future.
Thus it leads to rapid growth.
Let's go with steadfastness forward to
heal our Mother Earth and ourselves, we are all unified and a safe
future is our choice.
