Trapped inside a dilapidated 20-by-20 feet shed for more than four years, Clyde had nearly lost all hope by the time help reached him. Here, the approximately 20-year-old stallion stood in place on several feet of his own manure-suffering through the pain caused by his severely overgrown and cracked hooves.

robinm, thanks for bringing this to our attention.  It boggles the mind how someone can abuse any animal for such an extended period.  Those hoofs were terrible.  Our horses get trimmed every seven weeks!  The original article touched on horse slaughter and new US rules governing it.  It has caused big problems already with horses being abandoned and turned out to fend for themselves in State parks.  If the poor old soul has no meat value, many people will not opt for a relatively quick death at the slaughterhouse, but allow the horse to die a slow death on it's own.  Cattle tend not to be abused like horses because they have a monetary value in their meat.  If the North American public got over its prejudice against horse meat, these and many other horses would continue to have a "meat value" and perhaps be better cared for.  It is a waste to have beautiful meat go to feed our dogs and cats when it could be feeding people.  Anyway, I guess you can tell that I'm a carnivore.

Actually I am anti-slaughter for many reasons, the main one being that I have a huge respect for the horse .. if you get to know them properly and consider them a something other than a commodity, you will learn that they have amazing personalities. Remember this is a creature who has carried man throughout many wars through the ages, ploughed fields, been a faithful companion, helped countless people in therapeutic circumstances (disabled riders, equine-assisted therapy, etc); and so on and so on. How many other animals can you say that for? Not many other animals are used so extensively in sport, such as the Olympic disciplines, and racing (for people to bet on) ... and so on. Few other animals are used as much - and abused as much- by man.

Slaughter is not euthanasia, nor should it be a convenient solution to stop animals being mistreated.

I only have rescue animals, dogs, I don't understand how folks can do this and sleep.  It says something about the folks who did this.  Thanks for the story
