Opinion: The March of Progress
Athens, GA (Oct 8, 2007) - Living in a smaller city, there are certain things you take for granted. This includes some of the subtle. yet distinctive quiet views you enjoy as you walk to work in the morning. One day you wake up and the little view you enjoyed without thinking about it is gone.
One example is the construction of a new bank and parking garage on the northwest edge of downtown Athens, Georgia (USA). For the longest time this has just been a hole in the ground. Now the building is rising up, and one of those simple lovely views is disappearing.

Yes, growth and progress are inevitable. Still there are the little losses you mourn during the process. As the population growth of Atlanta creeps closer and closer to Athens, one wonders how much more of our little utopia will be swallowed up.

Christopher Byrne, although I've never been to Athens this thorough report is interesting nonetheless as it is a universal phenomenon, good reporting.
