NP Rank:
Poor S Africans double in decade
I can remember campaigns which were held last month throughout our country – Sri Lanka by UN with collaboration the Art of Living organization. The main objective of these campaigns was give pressure to the world leaders who have promised to help to achieve some targets so called Millennium Development Goals.
Eight Millennium Development Goals are the target which set by world leaders to achieve those in 2015. Te first goal is “Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.” Are we really on the edge to achieve this target?
I was very shock by looking at this news in BBC that “Poverty has increased both in absolute numbers and proportionally.” This is very critical situation where we have only eight years to achieve these eight goals.
The time has arise to work together and keep the promises and make our
globe a wonder land.
The South African Institute of Race Relations survey said 4.2m people were living on $1 a day in 2005.
This is up from 1.9m in 1996, two years after the first all-race elections.
"Poverty has increased both in absolute numbers and proportionally," SAIRR said in a statement, blaming the rise on unemployment and HIV/Aids.
Despite good economic growth in recent years, unemployment has remained consistently high at about 26%.
