NP Rank:
'Race' Signs Hung over School Water Fountains
Another racist symbol at another high school
The twist here is that the student accused of hanging the signs is
African-American, but that doesn't really change the message received
by the students walking up to get a drink of water.
An innocent prank?
Nope, not in practice.
I cannot believe that any high-school-age student is so ignorant as to not see the inherent insult in such an act. Having said that, I'd love to know what was going through that kid's head when he was putting those signs up.
The handmade signs were only posted on the wall at Hightower High School for a matter of minutes, but many here feel that being posted for only a matter of seconds is far too long.Fort Bend ISD police took a photo of the water fountains Wednesday afternoon inside Hightower High School. It's something you might expect to see in the 1960s, not 2007.
Two water fountains each had a handwritten sign above. One read "whites" and the other read "colored."
"Anybody would find that offensive," said Alice Gibson, aunt of a Hightower student. "Wouldn't you?"
"It would be interesting to see what was the kid's motivation," said Robert Ina, father of a Hightower student.
Campus police say they caught a 16-year-old student in the act of hanging the signs. School officials sent a letter home to parents on Thursday describing what had happened. The letter also explained that the teen was cited for allegedly committing a class C misdemeanor for disorderly conduct by an offensive gesture.

jordan, Good stuff. maybe the sound of air rushing in one ear and out the other because there is nothing to impede the flow. The kid is an idiot if he did this no matter his race...

Ugly prank indeed. I hope articles like these spark useful discussions and not exacerbate problems. Better talked about than not.

Alas. abusive actions frequently occur in high schools. Most of them do not make the headlines.
When was the last time you read a story about a condom that was placed over the fountain head of a water fountain?
Sexually abusive to the extent that administrators & teachers don't even want to touch it.
