Was there ever a time when we were able to leave our doors unlocked without fear? Michael Moore did make the dubious assertion, in
Bowling for Columbine, that Canadians are so safe they
don't even bother to lock them. He must not have been talking about Vancouverites. For a city hailed as
the best place to live in the world, this puts a bit of dangerous tarnish on that image of perfect beauty and safety.
A new report has given Vancouver a dubious honour: the highest break-in rate of all major Canadian and American cities, nearly four times that of New York City.
Last year, Vancouver recorded more than 1,100 break-ins per 100,000 residents while New York City had just over 300.
I'm moving to New York. It's safer there.

A notice has been posted in my apartment building, warning all residents to lock their windows and doors. Apparently, break ins in the West-End have more than doubled in the past few months. Boo.
