Light earthquake rocks Bay Area

heavily populated area on the north segment of the Hayward fault,
about two miles east of Oakland, according to the U.S. Geological
Survey. The temblor was felt on both sides of San Francisco Bay and
lasted up to 10 seconds.

Some businesses delayed opening because of broken windows, and
Pacific Gas and Electric Co. reported that some customers in Oakland
briefly lost power.

"It's a run-of-the-mill little earthquake," said Chris Mills, a
geologist with the Geological Survey. "It's a significant fault but a
small quake."
