I thought it might be useful to keep a running tab of those accounts found to be habbitual spammers. Hopefully we can get some spam accounts deleted this way.

  • cravenorg - all stories flagged as spam

  • barry123 - all stories flagged as spam

  • DanAndJenn - I want to flag them, but it looks like they are posting here and then posting to thier blog. Dating advice blog...

  • todd7 - all stories flagged as spam

  • zamhaziq - just one story, total spam..video links

  • msgbeepa - I think we could mark everything as incomplete

  • arielbujeiro - My Spanish is a little rusty, but it appears that he is just trying to repost evertying from his blog...all video tutorials.

What a fabulous idea, BD. I'd like to invite all others to add to this list.   I will check these out.

So taking off from where BD started, this  makes me think we might want to create a corral where we can all take potshots at offending spammers.

Of course I have a nuclear option of totally blocking an account.

Thanks, I figure we can keep track of some folks and mention others that are questionable. Eventually I would like to come up with a process to "submit" a spammer to someone (be it ANG or another Editor) to review the posts that were marked as spam and the poster's account to decide what the next course of action would be. That way there is some type of checks and balances, as well as continuity in emails to contributors...before they get nixed.

I also like the nuke idea!

  • tellman - ADD, ADHD, spam...last story I left to be nice and flag as
    incomplete
  • odreg & janika - same account, same spam...different languages. German
and Italian (or portuguese?). Marked all as spam...how did I know? Educated
guess when the subject was "burnout", "depression" and "limousines"
  • perunaag - 3 stories posted at the same time, all spam, driving hits to
    pages on interviewing

Other

  • loanman - his profile says he's in the business, but his "stories" could have a little more that just a blurb and drive traffic to his blog. That being said, he is at least following the idea of what we want NowPublic to be in terms of citing a blog as a source. This particular contributor is a grey area account to me.
  • msgbeepa - this person just annoies me with all of their spam/incomplete stuff
publicreader

The potshot idea is a good one, ANG.

group hug for BD!!! I am all for routing the spammers and those who just plain abuse the system.

To me, if  a contribution should contain one or more of these elements:

1. Original news, from what they have witnessed

2.  Commentary or critique of current news issue

3.  Commentary or critique or opinion on a news snip

4. New information on a news story

so called 'articles' are a grey area for me... especially when not related to current affairs. Recepies i've seen...general info stuff.

matte

I should add that items with no words, just headline and link get nuked - no hesitation

The Lion and Lamb Ministry - does posting a daily preaching count as spam - it is not news....

jordan

"Technology" gets quite a bit of spam, mostly from one-offs. Also, the news in that section tends to relate to retail products, so I'm getting a bit more fussy as to what I will "let slide"; basically, no more mentions of new products without some kind of commentary or disclosure. I'd not want one of my favorite sections to become all about the advertorial, especially when there is mooninite news to be uncovered.

The most recent repeat offender has been msgbeeba, which has clearly not escaper your collective attention!

alaaron - points to made for adsense pages. topics are hollow, not for a pubication like NP

gracecheng - seems ok on the surface, but her site is pushing a FX course heavily

Barry Mcconaghey  lets cut the rss facility here

OK, just flagged another Lion & Lam Ministry post. Blatantly no news content. I'm not J. Jonah Jameson or nothin', but I know a lack of news when I see it!

  • q4tax -  Jordan had flagged a few stories an incomplete, but after a little more research into this guy/girl, they are just reposting to get links to their blog on tax information. All "stories" are just headlines with links back to their tax blog. I marked 12 stories as spam...but there are 9 pages of stories. If possible I would reccomend a blanket "nuke" for all stories. I don't care if there are two valid ones at this point.
  • The Lion and Lamb Ministry - Same complaints as everyone else.
jordan

tusharm is pushing it, too.  All of his headlines, bar one or two, look what I delete from my Junk folder.

I'm crabby today...

  • mujjuoms: 3 stories marked as spam today...
  • iansmith: congratulations on using cut/paste...maybe we could write a word next time. 54 stories that could be marked as incomplete or just deleted
  • sadaq: stock website spam
  • msgbeepa: this person is so annoying...
  • Haecus: personal pet peeve, their account is gone, but they still have some stories
  • blewkarma: spam, link traffic, crap.

This is not spam, just a hot comment thread worth reading (which I agree with Blueshoe on). After reading the original article I was a little suspicious of the content myself.

I blocked both accounts you mentioned... thanks!

This is a great idea, great thread!

I noted that DanandJenn got a serious warning in February, but they're still at it.

This morning we had 2 posts from an internet home-based spammer; flagged 'em, now getting "access denied." Does that mean their account is in suspension or booted?

Tom van B

DanAndJenn is continually posting "stories" with links to a private website:

"Wait. Get more relationship and dating articles like this one at http://www.AskDanAndJennifer.com. Get answers to your most pressing questions about Dating, Relationships, Love, and Sex. Copyright 2007 www.AskDanAndJennifer.com"

Surely this is just redirecting traffic. I feel that what is happening here is sneaky. Any suggestions?

DanAndJenn

Hi Tom.

Not redirecting - just taking credit for our work. You know... The same way authors put their name on their books. How could they? :-)

Tom van B

DanAndJenn, In my view you are repurposing material from your own website to NP for the sole purpose of increasing traffic to your private website.  This has nothing to do with "just taking credit for our work ". It would be the same if I signed off with my Bindu Design website link with each contribution I make to NP. You are playing games.

generaldecay

Tom, I was just coming to the forum to post about DanAndJenn. They lift from their site, repost their content here, and then direct users back. Also, one of their pieces was flagged as needing more work and they ignored this. This suggests to me that they're not here for the interaction/ crowd-power, and only to get more visitors to their own site.

Tom van B

generaldecay, You are absolutely right. People should not be allowed to post anything that has a link to their own private website.
