Some Gaston and Cleveland homebuyers won’t have to repay nearly $2
million in second mortgage loans after three local builders agreed to
forgive those loans in exchange for avoiding charges of unfair and
deceptive lending practices.

“They were illegally acting as mortgage lenders,” said Noelle
Talley, spokeswoman for North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper.

Dixie Homes LLC of Gastonia and MCE Properties Inc. and Evans-Davis
Inc. of Kings Mountain agreed to forgive 66 second mortgages worth
$1.96 million for homeowners who received second mortgages in Gaston
and Cleveland counties under agreements with the Attorney General’s
Office and the Office of the Commissioner of Banks.
