MAX HARROLD, The Gazette

Bishop's University has locked out 283 unionized employees - including 130 professors, contract faculty and librarians and 153 support staff.

The lockout, which started at 12:01 a.m. today at the English-language institution in Lennoxville, near Sherbrooke, came after four days of talks with a provincial government labour relations conciliator failed, Bishop's principal Robert Poupart told The Gazette.

He added he hoped the lockout "quickens the pace to settle the conflict" by drawing the union back to the table.
