The Big Mac turns 40 today. The whopping burger -"two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame-seed bun, anyone" has humble beginnings, just like the mothership. It was first introduced in 1967 by Jim Delligatti, a McDonald's franchise owner in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. It's popularity spreading fast, making it a staple in all of its restaurants. Today, over 550 million Big Macs are sold each year in the U.S. alone. That's about 17 per second. Not bad for a little burger idea that started out in California drive thru, by two brothers and a milkshake mixer machine sales guy.
Ray Kroc mortgaged his home and invested his entire life savings to become the exclusive distributor of a five-spindled milk shake maker called the Multimixer.
The flavors that come together - it's like heaven in your mouth

I'd sooner eat the Happy Meal container than the burger that comes inside of it...

Is it the concept or the burgers themselves that are 40 years old?

The Big Mac is somehow the perfect hangover cure no matter where in the world you are... I've used it in such a way all over the globe and it always does the same trick! :)
The picture you've used from my Flickr is a prime example of such a scenario... one of the first of many hangovers from my time in Korea. The Big Mac is just an awesome example of standardising something in food that can always put a smile on your face.
Stuff Healthy Eating... long live the Big Mac and heres to another 40 years of greatness!

This is a good and simple little story. It's also a global story too. I like it. Keep up the good reporting.
