As of today, Louisiana is the only US state to still allow cockfighting. A bill passed yesterday in New Mexico ended legal cockfighting in the state. The Louisiana ban has been hung up due to a related bill that would make gambling at cockfights illegal, thus (theoretically) greatly reducing the number of cockfights in the state. Some Louisiana lawmakers are pushing for the latter bill in front of the former, which angers and puzzles animal rights groups who see the practice as cruel and archaic.
Louisiana lawmakers continue haggling over cockfighting today. A proposal to outlaw the rooster fights remains stalled in a House committee. The House Agriculture Committee amended Senator Art Lentini's bill, then postponed voting on the measure. Against Lentini's wishes, the committee amended the bill so that the ban would go into effect in August 2008.

I suppose that banning gambling would reduce the demand for cockfighting, as I would wonder how many rooster breeders do it solely for the love of the sport. Above all, though, it's a victory for roosters, who don't necessarily want to end up like this.
