Lovers Fined For "Public Hugging"

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has punished three policemen for detaining and fining two young lovers 5,000 yuan ($660) for hugging in public on the Chinese version of Valentine's Day.The couple paused to embrace while taking a stroll along a river in Jinshi in the central province of Hunan, the Shanghai Daily said.
"As we hugged each other, three policemen came and separated us so they could ask questions. They brought us to the police station and didn't free us until we paid a 5,000 yuan fine," the paper quoted female detainee, Xiao Hong, as saying in an Internet posting on a local news portal.
The police were in plain clothes and many other couples were out strolling on the evening of "Qi Xi" -- a local festival often dubbed Chinese Valentine's Day, the Beijing News said in a separate report.
Internet users poured derision on the police, which "forced officials to look into the case," the paper said.
"The three policemen have been punished. We have never dealt with such a case before," the paper quoted a clerk at the police station as saying.
Police had refunded the money to Xiao Hong's boyfriend and apologized, the paper said.
Police in China have previously taken a dim view of public displays of affection. Last October, volunteers offering "free hugs" in a shopping street in Beijing were hauled away for questioning.

That just makes me sad. I know that, in many parts of the Pacific Rim, public displays of affection are frowned upon but not considered an arrestable offense!

Actually Jordan Public displays of affection are a western thing and
non Muslim Africa. 3/4's of the world regard it as offensive. A thing
to remember when in India or any Muslim Country.
As for China I call BS
on this story. First it comes from AP, second it appears no where else. Public Displays of affection are not the cultural norm in China and they are especially frowned upon when it involves "mixed race contact" They have about the same attitude to it as loony Southern Baptists do towards Black men and white women.

Okay, I'm slightly confused...you're calling BS on the story...even though you agree that in China public displays of affection are (emphasis is mine) "especially frowned upon"? So why don't you believe the story? Is it because we all know the AP is out to get Red China? Did the local Al-Jazeera feed not have time to run the story in between beheadings? Or are you calling BS because it's just automatic for you...this story doesn't disparage the United States or single white males...ITS ALL A LIE!!! Anyway, it's obvious the whole story was written in a humorous fashion. It's just too bad that loony liberalism has replaced southern baptism as the center of extremeism. Southern Baptists may frown upon interracial marriages, (I don't know I'm not southern baptist, and have never heard one say anything about the subject), but it seems that folks like you have declared war on common sense in the name of ideology. Good luck with that.

Cross curtural marriages are actually quite common here in the U.S. and public displays of racism are quite rare. From what I hear yous guys down under have quite a problem with racism yourself. So.. tend your business pardner, and when it comes to religous tendencies, bugger off, this is twice you have insulted me regarding religon.

First of all, Gmony; Did you really pull the terrorism card? Really? Over a story about China and a comment on religion? Do yourself a service buddy, step away from the ledge. Reasonable people can disagree. I'm with you on the religion crack, there's no need for it, and from what I've read so far from SthPacific, I don't think I'll be inviting him over for tea anytime soon. Well phrolen I see that went down hard, the Idea it's OK to slander all Chinese is OK but when I turn it about (Knowing your Religous Leanings before hand) it's classed as anti-American hate. LOL Now I have been accused of calling Jews Hook Nosed Ha HA way to pull something out of context.
@detractors If you remember it was gmony who was calling those people who are Jews anti-Israeli. I was defending them. But dont let me stop you from slandering someone, it seems to be the American way these days. Just make a wild acusation, Nothing too specific, keep repeating it, dont offer any proof or evidence. Now that sounds like Anti-Americanism to me. I thought your country was founded on better principals than that.

PS. Large agricultural industries will have to at some point pay for their excessive methane emissions.
