A massive system failure is disrupting BlackBerry e-mail for the eight million North American users of the mobile messaging device.

"It seems as if it's basically short of a total system failure, given that Research In Motion would have redundant systems to deal with a minor outage," Jesse Hirsh, president of Openflows Networks in Toronto, said Wednesday. "But this has been so severe it's been down all night."

Good stuff, ricknight! Looks like they're still down, too -- the Crackberry addicts I know are majorly freaking out.

What happened to Blackberry users is possibly one of the severe shortcomings of a proprietary infrastructure and proprietary protocols I would say. One of the reasons I never dreamt about getting a Blackberry and like to keep it WAP, POP3, SMTP, IMAP4, WiFi and HTTP instead. Old fashioned but pretty redundant (which is good when it comes to technical failures). Thanks for submitting the story, rick.

The oldies are still the best...  Blackberry free, and loving it.
