Master Plan assures Macintosh Island’s future

The future of Macintosh Island is assured for all, following the adoption of the Final Master Plan at today’s meeting of the full Council.

In presenting the Master Plan to councillors, Cr Bob La Castra echoed the comments of consultant Mr John Mayo, who addressed last week’s Health and Community Services Committee meeting.

Mr Mayo, who was engaged by the Council to carry out an equitable access audit of Macintosh Island Park, told the committee last Tuesday a series of ‘outrageous statements’ made about the Macintosh Island Master Plan had been ‘short on substance, misleading and merely mischief-making’.

“People may proclaim their opinions loudly but noise is no substitute for university-based human movement studies and the strategies of planning and development professionals,” Mr Mayo said.

The Master Plan has received strong support from representatives of the disability sector, particularly in relation to improved access, which will provide increased opportunities for enjoyment of the park’s attractions.

Cr La Castra said the project had attracted a lot of interest and debate and the Council had extended the period of community consultation to make sure all stakeholders had sufficient opportunity to have their say on the Draft Master Plan.
