Untold millions of USAans are braving high gas prices, traffic and heat to get out of town and have fun at the beach. Happy Holidays, all!
This is getaway day for what's looked at as the unofficial start of summer. Millions of people will be climbing into their cars or getting on airplanes for the Memorial Day weekend.

Gas prices are high: averaging $3.22 a gallon. But that's not expected to keep people from traveling. AAA says it thinks people will still take their summer vacations but will try to spend less on hotels and restaurants.

Southern California air travelers experienced some delays at the start of the holiday weekend while aviation officials dealt with a partial aircraft-surveillance radar outage in San Diego.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says the so-called TRACON radar facility that handles incoming aircraft for 21 airports in the region was down from around 5:30 until 6:20 this morning.

He says another radar facility in Palmdale handled the incoming flights for the region during the outage.

Gregor says some incoming aircraft at LAX, John Wayne, San Diego, Long Beach and other airports were held back.

But he says the impact is expected to be minimal.
