Women are better drivers than men, says survey

An Australian Insurance company says the battle of the sexes has been settled on the road, but what do you think: are women really better drivers than men?

-->

Insurance company AAMi is claiming that women are better drivers than men, based on a survey it has published today.

The findings are based upon a national telephone survey of 2384
licensed drivers conducted in most States and Territories in 2006, as
well as an analysis of AAMI claims data.

AAMI spokesperson Geoff Hughes says the results mean it's no
surprise that men's motoring insurance claims typically cost 20 per
cent more than women's.

“Our claims data shows that men’s crashes tend to be more serious
than women’s – they are more likely to be involved in head-on
collisions, roll-overs and loss-of-control crashes, as well as crashes
involving pedestrians, cyclists and animals.

“Conversely, women are more likely to collide with stationary objects or reverse into other cars.

AAMI says the findings are supported by men’s experience of road
trauma – nationally, male drivers are three times more likely than
women to be killed on Australian roads (source: Australian Transport
Safety Bureau).

Also according to AAMI's findings, men are more likely to break the law
by speeding, driving when under the influence of alcohol or
recreational drugs and driving while using a hand-held mobile phone.

Are you surprised by the survey's findings, or would you dismiss it
on the grounds of being based on only a limited number of drivers?

And do you see more instances of poor or reckless driving by men or by women?
