SACRAMENTO
– Michael Moore, director of the soon to be released documentary,
“SiCKO” testified before Senator Kuehl and other California lawmakers
today in a informational briefing to discuss the relevance of the film
for the California Legislature as it battles health reform this year.

At
the briefing today, in reference to Senate passage of SB 840 (Kuehl) -
the California Universal Healthcare Act, which establishes a single
payer universal health care system in California to cover every
resident of the state, Moore stated, “In recognizing that for-profit
insurance is incompatible with a caring, a moral and a high quality
health care system that provides coverage for all, Senator Kuehl is
leading the fight to break the industry’s death grip on our health care
system.” In expressing his gratitude for Senator Kuehl’s long term
leadership Moore added, “I believe the people are on your side”.

Moore’s
documentary is an up-close look at America’s crumbling health care
system telling the story of what the health care crisis has meant in
real terms for average Americans. “This film will hopefully serve as a
wakeup call about the way that insurance companies are mismanaging our
healthcare system”, stated Senator Kuehl, “The main obstacle to
universal health care is finding the political will to overcome
insurance companies, and this film is going to lead people to want to
get involved. It will add a needed boost to achieving universal health
care.”

The briefing was followed by a large rally with Moore
and Kuehl sponsored by the California Nurses Association at 2 pm on the
West Steps of the Capitol. Moore and Kuehl will then accompany the
rallying nurses to the Crest Theater for a 3:30 pm special showing of
“SiCKO” - open to the media that will include a questions and answer
period from the audience. Later this evening Kuehl will attend the
special screening at the Crest beginning at 7 pm.
