TODAY’s Matt Lauer and Ann Curry gave Caitlin Upton a do-over on the now infamous question during an exclusive interview Tuesday. And this time the 18-year-old from South Carolina nailed it, according to a TODAYShow.com contributor
Here's her new answer:
“Personally, my friends and I, we know exactly where the United States is on a map,” she said. “I don’t know anyone else who doesn’t. If the statistics are correct, I believe there should be more emphasis on geography in our education so people will learn how to read maps better.”

Y'all two maybe don't fully comprehend the South Carolinian dialect of English. I have lived here in the Palmetto State since 1963, and would gladly interpret the lady's remarks for you. What she said in Southcarolinian was:
"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, um, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq and everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uh, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, should help South Africa and should help Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future."
The translation into regular English is:
"My own opinion is that United States citizens, as opposed to other North Americans, cannot do this because some people simply don't have a command of basic cartography. I furthermore believe that we should emulate South Africa and even such areas as Iraq, where these skills are acquired at an early age. Then our own United States educational system would surpass that of South Africa, Iraq -- and even the Asian countries -- and we would be in a secure position to face the future."
The key to understanding the way we folks speak is to know the intricate twists and turns of the syntax, and to realize that the precise placement of an "um" or "uh" in our idiom equates to the tones of languages like Mandarin Chinese.
And I do agree, the lady sure is pretty.
