I am black, female, and southern. I love all things southern--grits, the summer heat, and the use of y'all as multiple parts of speech. However, there is a schizophrenic nature about being a southerner and a black woman. When I was a child, I read Gone with the Wind and I wanted to be Scarlet O'Hara.

Update: I've been absent from these pages for a while. My mother died suddenly on September 15, 2008 and my whole world changed. I've spent a lot of time with family. In spite of our significant loss, we've also been blessed with a new arrival. My nephew and his wife had a baby boy on December 28, 2008, reminding us all that life is cyclical. He is the joy of my life and has given us all the ability to remember the goodness that life brings.
