It is still unclear whether the imported textiles and garments are intended to meet local needs or re-exported as Bali has so far been known as a textile and garment exporter though its textile and garment industry has been growing at slow pace since 2005.
The significant increase in textile and garment imports comes as a major surprise as local garment producers are gearing up for exports.
"The Balinese garment producers have very bad luck," garment producer Made Kariana said in commenting on the textile and garment imports.
Bali`s garment exports plunged after the World Trade Organization (WTO) lifted the province`s quotas to export textiles and garments to a number of countries on January 1, 2005.
