Not an accident that they waited until after Christmas. Probably a result of increased fuel costs which is a huge factor for shipping, obviously.

FedEx Corp. said Wednesday it will increase rates for its freight and long haul less-than-truckload units by about 5.5 percent effective Jan. 14.

The general rate increase will apply to interstate and intrastate traffic, and certain shipments between the United States and Mexico and Canada.

The rate hikes follow a 4.9 percent increase at the package delivery company's ground and home delivery divisions, as well as a similar increase in air shipping rates. These rate increases will also take effect in January

The ever declining mail volume added to put pressure on the postal service to reduce the workforce. FedEx, for example, has a lot of upcoming layoffs. The worst of the FedEx layoffs are hitting Memphis, home of Elvis, and this is a case where it really is the Heartbreak Hotel. However, they also know to not be cruel, as employees affected, about 14,000 of them, will receive severance packages and job counseling, which may save them from payday loans for a while. Other areas are going to be affected as well, but Memphis will be the hardest hit. It's good that they get severance pay, because the affected employees couldn't get payday loans as a result of FedEx layoffs.
