President asks to sterilize process of BI gubernatorial election
Medan (ANTARA News) - The president and the House of Representatives (DPR) have been asked to sterilize the process of the Bank Indonesia (BI) gubernatorial election which will be held in May this year.
This step should be taken to prevent suspicions that officials of the central bank were involved in corrupt practices`which are now facing high-ranking officials of the bank who had been declared suspects by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
"Naming three top BI officials as suspects has become a bad precedence to the business climate and environment in Indonesia, especially that the charges against BI Governor Burhanuddin Abdullah had also been levelled against previous two BI governors Sjahrir Sabirin and Sudrajat Sjiwandono.
The two were eventually declared not guilty," Chairman of the Banking Survey Center of the Sumatra Utara state univesity`s economic school John Tafbu Ritonga said here on Monday.
Please don`t let the people justify other agenda from certain parties wishing to grab the BI gubernotarial post from the incumbant officials.
"It is lamentable that the allegation or accusation of involvement in corruption in BI could affect the stability of Indonesia`s monetary condition. In the meantime, countries which are still weak in their monetary condition will undergo a delay in their economic growth," John said.
However, he added, the accusation against Burhanuddin has yet to affect the performance of Bank Indonesia (BI) as the central bank which is marked with the strengthening of the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar, and the rise in forest fund in BI bonds.(*) END
