As I'm sure you are all aware, today was the bloodiest day in U.S. history, and
it happened right here in the little college town of Blacksburg, Va. As of
right now, 32 people have been killed including the gunman and scores more are
injured.
I went to campus this morning to drop off some paper work at 9:00 am at Squires
Student Center, and everything seemed normal and quiet. Nothing was apparently
wrong or out of the ordinary at that time, and I came and went without any
knowledge of what had happened earlier in the morning. I came back to my
apartment which is about two miles off campus and checked my email when I
received the first of many troubling messages. The first email was about a
person on campus that had a gun at West Ambler Johnston, and for students to
stay put where they were. Then the next several emails grew more abject and
horrible than the next until finally my roommates and I turned on the local
news and recoiled in horror. The feared worst had indeed come true. Shots
fired. FBI and SWAT on the scene. Students killed. A national tragedy was
unfolding before my eyes.
Now as I sit here in my room with the faint sounds of the news reports, I can’t
help but ask why. There are no words to describe this sanguine act of sheer
terror that has befallen my quiet home and quaint community.
As for now all I can do, all we can do, is sit and wait for answers to a
question that has not one.
