Vancouver, BC – September 26, 2008—NowPublic in partnership with the Vancouver Sun, today announced its fourth MostPublic Index, identifying the Web’s 20 most visible individuals in Vancouver.  The MostPublic Index is a detailed barometer of whose voices are most heard in the digital landscape as new channels—Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and the like—transform how media is created and spread.  Previously, NowPublic identified and announced the MostPublic influencers in New York, Silicon Valley and Los Angeles.

“The goal of NowPublic’s MostPublic Index is to measure—on a completely transparent, metric-driven basis—who has the greatest digital reach and is most effectively broadcasting their own personal brand online,” said Leonard Brody, CEO of NowPublic.  “Vancouver, the home of NowPublic, is the Canadian hub for new media and by far one of the most innovative cities in North America.  It is with great pleasure that we team up with the Vancouver Sun to identify and recognize those, locally, who are most impacting the global media landscape.”

From his blog: "ian Bell Hello; I am a technology executive, marketer and entrepreneur living in Vancouver, BC Canada. I used to live in the Hollywood Hills in LA, California (here); and on Potrero Hill in San Francisco and near my job at Cisco in San Jose, CA (here). Sorry - no clues as to where, specifically, I live now. :) I’m fortunate to have been able to work with some great people to create some really cool services, such as BuzMe, GeekMail, Whooshnet Wireless, RingCentral, Internet Call Director, PulverRadio, and EQO. I’ve worked with some great companies like Cisco, FrontBridge, Whistler Cable, and Telus; and I’ve started a few myself. This is a fun ride and I’m enjoying every minute of it. My hobbies and passions include SportBikes and Hockey (yes, that’s me in goal, playing somewhere in Germany). I love great wine and music, and worked as a DJ many moons ago. I studied in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University where I worked and learned in the Media Analysis Lab under Dr. Stephen Kline, in the Centre for Policy Research on Science & Technology under Dr. Catherine Murray, and at the world-renowned ExCITE Lab under Dr. Gerri Sinclair. My research, usually using Apple equipment, was generously supported by the Apple Research Partnership Program and was acknowledged in Apple documentation and numerous books at the time. So it goes without saying that I use a lot of Apple (not Apple) products in my work. I wrote my first book in 1997, which is now seriously obsolete. While my first book remains my only book, several other projects are in the works. This blog spans my interest in politics, technology, sports, and health. You might like to read about my return from the fog of mailing-list entropy."

In case you were wondering how this index was created, here are all the gory, mathematical details.

Thanks so much for the mention, and I have to say I'm very proud that Vancouver has three women in the top ten!

0
Nathalie

You say that as if women were handicapped or something like that.

"Thanks so much for the mention, and I have to say I'm very proud that Vancouver has three mentally challenged in the top ten!"

Women are just as equal as men there is nothing to be proud about except the fact of you being put in the alleged "top 20".

Thanks for including me. I'm not sure about your methodology, but I chalk my placement up to starting back in 2002.

Alfred Hermida

I'm honoured to be in the list which shows the strength of new media talent in Vancouver. Congratulations to all.

Can you think of a better methodology Darren?  We are all ears.  We spent months working on this....never going to be perfect, but we think this is the best way to get at a number.

Is there a way to find out where an individual name fits in this rating such as the leads of NP amongst other media related names in Vancouver?

And what if someone for various reasons would rather brand under an alias?

Darren Barefoot

Leonard: Well, I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I wondered about the following points:

* How did you generate an exhaustive list of Vancouver bloggers? For example, I haven't done the math, but I find it hard to believe that Vancouverite uber-blogger John Chow (http://www.johncow.com/) doesn't make this list. He surely has many more visitors than I do. Likewise, http://vancouvercondo.info/ gets a huge number of comments, so I suspect their traffic is pretty robust.

* Why didn't you include Google PageRank as a metric? According to the web professionals I've interviewed (I'm co-authoring a book that required it) it's considered much more reliable and meaningful than Alexa, Comcast and Compete.

* I'd also have included an average comment count for, say, the 20 most recent entries.

That said, I do applaud your emphasis on empirical metrics.

Empirical Metrics? Is that not or would that not be, lets say non harmonious or conflicting?

I am no expert in this matter yet more confused then I was before I read all the comments and Post as well. Can some one clarify all this a little, Please.

mbaumgartner

Hi Paschen, you can see our formula here:  I'm not sure if this is harmonious or conflicting, in any case it has generated a lot of interesting commentary.
