As the second Sunday in May nears, florists, jewellers and candy shops ready their tills and replenish their stock in anticipation of scrambling shoppers gearing up for Mother's Day gifts. Canadians will spend an average of about $150 for Mother's Day - an increase of about five per cent over last year, according to James Smerdon, senior associate with Colliers Hudema Consulting.
How much is the love of your Mother worth?

I just got off the phone with my grandmother, who described Mother's Day in words I cannot reprint here. She says that if you love your mum, then you don't need a particular day in which to express it, and that Mother's Day exists only for florists and card printers.
I agree with her... but I also wouldn't dare miss making that phone call!
But to the point: my mother did her best to raise me, teaching me not to play in traffic and to treat other people how I wanted to be treated; that scorpions weren't toys (cool though they looked, like little robots) and to say "please" and "thank you". She's absolutely beyond price. Thanks, mom, if you're reading this!
Not everyone has a mom in their life, for whatever reason: death, divorce, estrangement, but everyone has a parent or parent figure who taught them the basic rules of the game. Big shout-out to the parents out there: it's harder than it looks, I'm told.
