MySpace Sex Offenders Busted

Whilst I seriously hope that NP isn't attracting sex-offender readers, it's probably best, should you be legally barred from Internet use, that you not create a page on what is arguably the world's most popular social-networking site. So far there's no evidence that these offenders have been using MySpace to reoffend, but Internet use was banned as a condition of parole. My dad was a career parole officer (which made me a very paranoid teen): they know what you're up to, no matter how clever you think you are... Putting your details online publicly, though, just turns the whole planet into your PO. While I'm dispensing online advise, don't rape people or molest children.

Just weeks after social network MySpace asked for advice on how to legally hand over information about sex offenders using its pages, law enforcement authorities have started to make arrests.

In Texas, a total of seven convicted sex offenders have been taken into custody. Six were registered sex offenders, arrested for parole violation. All six had MySpace profiles, despite the terms of their probation barring them from using the internet.

A seventh man was arrested for failing to register as an offender after his profile turned up on the social networking site.

None of the six men arrested has been charged with any new sexual offences, but between them have convictions ranging from aggravated sexual assault, to molestation of a child, and indecency with a child by exposure. The youngest victim was just four.

The Texas attorney general issued a press release giving details of the arrests.
