Mystery Movie Trailer Goes Viral
[Updates and links at bottom of story]
I told you previously how I went to see Transformers, but I neglected to mention the mystery trailer that is buzzing all over the web. It's a Mystery because the movie had no title in the preview and is not listed on IMDB yet. The movie's website is just the date of the release [01.18.2008] with a creepy cellphone picture.
The trailer starts out with a group of kids having a going away party for their friend. There are jumps between a "movie viewer's" standard view and a "personal camcorder" view during the party -the kids are talking about how much they like or will miss their friend. Than there is a loud rumble, followed by power issues, and car alarms -no more "happy feelings" -it's time to get to the plot! TV reports are going on in the background and the kids head to the roof to see what looks like a fireball in the distance eating up part of New York City. At this point you have a view point as one of the party goers holding their camera so its quick pans and jittery video will be sure to make people dizzy.
What is it? I suspected it was for Godzilla, but without a title I dismissed it, however other people are speculating the same thing. Possibly some original monster movie or something we know of already. Ideas from more 80s cartoon movies to Jurassic Park 4 to Lost (the TV series movie) to something about the apocalypse. The movie's code name is "Cloverfield" and the trailer has been pulled from many sites already, but Google Video still has a bootleg copy online for now.
There is speculation that the majority of the film will be shot with consumer video cameras to give it a "firt person" view during the movie and the relationship with the cast and group of friends from the party. The other rumor is that the film was shot for US$30 million.
Whatever this movie is about, its marketing has gone viral and people on the streets that have seen the trailer won't stop talking about it. Hopefully "Cloverfield" can maintain the momentum while leaking more details as January 18, 2008 approaches!
Additional information, including casting can be found at SlashFilm and First Showing.
UPDATE 07.06.2007: Are these sites connected to the movie? Viral blogs and games? Maybe...
Is the time on this photo linked to the bible? Matthew 12:36 "I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak."
UPDATE 07.10.2007: J.J. Abrams comments on the movie and the viral websites
- Ethan Haas websites are not related to the movie
- "Slusho" material is related to the movie (Slusho is the name of a drink for the JJ Abrams tv show Alias)
- www.slusho.jp is another viral site for the movie
- Paramount has officially launched the trailer and admitted they know about the movie
UPDATE 07.16.2007: Title to be officially announced at San Diego Comic Con (July 26-29)
- The movie's website has been updated with a third photo
- According to AICN the movie will not be shot with personal cameras, "People seem intrigued at
the idea of a whole film being shot like that, and that’s pretty much
what you’ll get. The film starts with a rescue crew cleaning up after
the entire incident, and one of them finds a camera. They rewind the
tape, press play... and the playback is the movie that unfolds." -Moriarty @ AICN [Link and quote thanks to Slash Film]

JJ Abrams' true strength as a storyteller, in my opinion, is in the relationships he creates, both between the characters themselves and between the cahracters and the audience. For that reason I'm keen to see what this project is all about. (And apparently it's not a Voltron movie; sorry, Prince Lotor fans)
The device of taking advantage of limited means in filmmaking is a fantastic one: some images are more striking on low-quality media (as they capture that eye-witness vibe), as long as the story and the production style are in synch.
