It seems more like exploitation theatre than anything else: throw enough lurid stuff onstage, and eventually people will buy tickets... but is it any good as an adaptation? That's the real question. Rarely do forced reconceptions make for interesting work from an audience's standpoint. Oh, the Hamlets I've seen that must have looked so brilliant on paper...

I agree. Too much away from the original sense of the opera. If you follow this way, anything is possible, anything is valid. There is no reason for using Verdi's opera as an excuse for the need of stardom of stage directors.
