NP Rank:
New Zealand to lead UN call for nuclear weapons risk to be lowered
It is difficult to see how small nations such as New Zealand and Sweden can influence larger countries. The U.N. for instance has been sidelined by the US with regards to the war in Iraq. The U.N. is basically a lame duck, and the biggest bully will always call the shots.
Nevertheless, it is encouraging that these smaller countries are making the call for the nuclear weapons risk to be lowered.
WELLINGTON, New Zealand: Anti-nuclear New Zealand, with the support of like-minded nations including Sweden, will call on nuclear weapons states at the United Nations to lower the risk posed by their nuclear arsenals, an official said Thursday.
"Thousands of nuclear weapons currently are on high-alert status, ready for instant launch. This presents a major threat to global security," said Disarmament and Arms Control Minister Phil Goff.
"We call on states with nuclear weapons to take mutual action to remove all nuclear weapons from launch-on-warning status," he said.
Nuclear weapon systems at a high level of readiness increase the risk of those weapons being used, including unintentionally, which would lead to catastrophic consequences, Goff noted.
"New Zealand will lead a call at the ... General Assembly this year for nuclear states to draw back their nuclear weapons from immediate launch readiness," he said in a statement.
On Thursday, the chairman of Sweden's Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission, Hans Blix, said the United Nations needs to face up to the reality of nuclear weapons.
The veteran Swedish diplomat and former U.N. arms control inspector was in New Zealand for a Red Cross event.
Blix said it is worrying that the U.N. Conference on Disarmament in Geneva had not dealt in any way with the development and existence of nuclear weapons during the past 10 years.
Blix said it is essential that more efforts be made to eliminate nuclear arms and weapons of mass destruction....

Well I think that they are still a bit miffed about ANZUS Bro :) Looks
like our troops will be out of Iraq and Afghanistan by Xmas if all goes
well Bush is begging Rudd to reconsider as we speak :) I was also
talking to Mr Blix recently about Pakistan. Remember it has always been
a small committed group of people who have made the most fundamental
changes in world events.
Tom van B, I like this story. It's good stuff.

SthPacific, Yes, the Americans threw New Zealand out of the strategic alliance because of the NZ anti-nuclear stance. New Zealand, to this day, forbids the US from bringing nuclear powered warships into its waters. The giant does not like to be told be the gnat. New Zealand has been severely punished by the US in the form of restrictions to trade access. But I like this gutsy little country - not many have stood up to the US out of fear of reprisals.
I am really surprised at the ultra aggressive war stance openly displayed by a number of US contributors to NP. A number of people are openly happy for the war in Iraq to escalate into other regions such Pakistan and Iran. Maybe these people have suffered from the same alcoholic haze that Bush found himself in during his younger years. In a country where apparently a fifth of the population cannot find the the USA on the world map - one does have to wonder.

Good find, Tom van B. I'm just glad that Mr. Blix is still on the job.

It's only when the "little guys (and gals)" speak up that change is possible. The collective mindset of "Oh, I couldn't make a difference" is what leads us into trouble to begin with.

gmony714, You'll find we don't need to "teach that big bully a lesson". That big bully is busily digging a big hole for itself.
