# The DeCaf Co. hopes to arm consumers with the power to decaffeinate their own coffee, tea or soda in seconds. The startup's tongue-depressor-like wand removes up to 70% of caffeine (but none of the flavor) from a beverage with just a couple of turns.

# Typically, coffee beans are soaked in chemicals and hot water that dissolve caffeine molecules, then again in the water, after it's decaffeinated, to restore some – but not all – of the java flavor. DeCaf's wand is coated with polymers that suck most of the jumpiness right out of the liquid.

# The FDA is reviewing the wand's efficacy and safety. The DeCaf Co. envisions a broader future for the wand, like removing impurities from gasoline and water or drugs from potential date-rape cocktails.
