The notion of New Yorkers snorting cocaine is not fascinating. But rather what is, is that scientists can trace back a chemical to the rivers around drainage areas, and therefore determine how much cocaine people consume based on those amounts. Apparently, there are certain chemicals that are only produced by the body during cocaine consumption. The waste gets eliminated and drains to the rivers, and stays in the rivers.

Researchers started the study near Germany's Rhine River drainage system, and out of curiosity moved to New York's Hudson River. There they found the by-products of a projected consumption totaling over 16 tons of cocaine per year. That's a per capita rate of 172 grams per year. Here is a funny video that I can't understand, but point is taken.

New York continues its reign as the Cocaine Capital of the World. One is almost tempted to upbraid them for wasting the stuff. Nowhere did researchers find as much pure cocaine as they did in the Hudson River.

nyc likes it cocanie fo sure but, "a per capita rate of 172 grams per year"?!? that would mean just under half a gram a day per person on average...  by comparision, an 8 ball or 3.5 grams is a party for a few folks... so half a gram per day on averge per person in nyc?? no freakin way... i call bullshit

Detecting cocaine traces from drainage areas? That's a first... Considering the population density in New York I am not surprised to hear the city in no 1 in cocaine consumption. I think it would be more relevant to report this considering the percentage of cocaine users in all the New Yorkers rather than measuring the amount to substances in drainage areas.
