Bugs: Random Site Issues

babblingdweeb

I thought it might be helpful to post some bugs or issues with the site you have come across, that way we can determine if it's a local problem (i.e. you're the problem, your computer/browser is the problem) or a site issue that can get passed on to the developers.

Additionally, it might be helpful to mention if you think it's a small issue or large issue (high/low). I don't want to start a thread that spawns 100 little site changes or gripes -that won't make the developers happy!

Old issues:
- Flagged for spam gives a web page with "16" on it. [FIXED]

- Flagging issue that was resolved in eqarly Feb, I don't recall the problem. [FIXED]

Browser issues:
- IE 7.0: (very low) doesn't let you edit a comment from a flag (incomplete) until you post the comment. For the times I use IE, it doesn't bother me to just edit the comment after the post because it takes 2 seconds.

Other:
- Profiles: (very low) I updated my profile a few weeks ago with my real name/details/etc and it was saved, and showing. Now it shows a previous update without my name/details/etc. Anyone else having an issue?

- Shozu support: (low) Is there a way to connect Shozu to NowPublic, or a similar mobile upload tool for cellphones? I read an article from ANG mentioning Shozu, but I can't seem to figure out how to link it with the site. This could be all me with the problem...

- Forum: (low, for now) I think we talked about this before, I don't recall the outcome...the forum is visible to anyone that knows the URL for the newsroom. While we're not bad about talking the spammers, topics in the Newsroom are showing up on Google. This could present an issue if, say for example: ANG wanted to tell all of us about the AP collaboration before it was public; it would have been been public when posted to the newsroom. Right now this is benign, but it could pose a problem in the future.

This topic is part of the archive and has been locked.

- Math questions (low): 2+6 = 8 darn it! Maybe it's my connection at work bouncing between T1 lines, but I know it has happened at home as well. Posting comments seems to be a 1 in 4 where I am told I can't add. At least once I know I was actually wrong, a few other times I know I was right. It always works the second time around.

babblingdweeb,
thanks so much for the bug reports! keep em coming and i'll do my best to have
them addressed quickly. One thing - it'd help to have a thread per issue grouping
vs. a lot of unrelated bugs in one thread i.e. all the flagging issues in one
thread… I’ll enter these into our bug reporting system, and get back to you as
we bash them.

wrt to shozu, you can setup shozu to send to an email address, in our case
you would send it to "news@nowpublic.com"
(the “to email address”) and you can configure shozu to specify the from address
(“your email address”) when sending, so you can ensure that content you send in
is associated with your account; their system is relatively easy to use and
configure (http://www.shozu.com/portal/selfprovisioning.do?operation=select and from here select, “Email - Use ShoZu to send videos and
photos to email addresses.” which for me is: http://www.shozu.com/portal/provider.do?config=100).

The downsides to this:

1) I've found there is a large delay on shozu's part between when they
receive the file from the phone to when we get it here at NP - many hours in
some cases in my testing, where as when you send to flickr or blip that have
tighter integration, it appears significantly faster, often in less than 10
minutes once it's been transferred off the phone. I had a few e-mails back and
forth with shozu, hopefully we can get tighter integration working in the near
future.

2) it does not support rich metadata i.e. tagging

one workaround we have in test/alpha - is that you can upload photos to flickr
and tag them, “nowpublic” and have an nid (the identifier of a story), and we
monitor for the items tagged “nowpublic” and there is a workflow that walked
you through importing them the first time/granting permission and then
automatically doing in the future; this feature is only in development and has
not been rolled out, but I think it's pretty much ready to go (it's actually
part of a much larger project, the “crowd power” stuff some of you might have
seen in will see in the very near future that is in live alpha for a few folks,
and soon to be in live beta for all you editors).

wrt to the math captcha - yeah it sucks! we've tried to track down
the problem and have had little success; the development team is
actually hard at work on upgrading the version of Drupal that we run
(NP is based on drupal) and since this always works the second time,
while it's crappy i'm leaving it for part of the migration process.

as for the forums being public, eventually, hopefully sooner rather
than later, I'd like to open this up to everybody; I think we are all
blown away by it's reception/use and would like to see everyone
collaborating. I'm sure we will talk about this more in the editor's
meeting tomorrow night.

so that leaves us with the browser issue and the and the profile problem; might need to have someone follow-up with you on one or both of those, will be in contact soon

Thanks! Glad I didn't tick you off with piling work up for you! I'll start a new thread per issue in the future. Als, I might reccomend to everyone start your thread with "Site issue: [issue here]" so that it's esay for the NP staff to see, and everyone else to ignore if they want.

 - Shozu: got it! Funny, I just saw the email link on the main page after I posted those and I thought "umm I wonder if I can do it that way?" I suppose emailing from the phone diredtly would be another way to go, forget using Shozu in the interm. This is more of an idea for me, not really looking to exploit the camera on my mobile just yet. However, the idea of taking a short video interview with a 1.3mpx camera has occured to me.

wrt Math: gotcha. No worries, it's actually more amusing than anything else...to me at least!

wrt Forums: I'll mention some stuff in the other topic you started

wrt Profile & Browser:  For now it's minor. I am going to put my name back in there right now and add the stuff ANG and I discussed, just makes me curious if there was a DB data cascade that got hung up.

Previously:

Other:

- Profiles: (very low) I updated my profile a few weeks ago with my
real name/details/etc and it was saved, and showing. Now it shows a
previous update without my name/details/etc. Anyone else having an
issue?

I use the "track" tab inside my profile to look for comments people left in stories/posts/ect -I noticed today that once again my profile has shrank and ends with "; ..." Formatting has also been removed. I don't care as much about my profile as I do that there is a storage/db issue.

Is there an issue with the user database replicating to another server...maybe the field is smaller?

Justin, I am posting this to our dev team. Thanks for this.

Just sending out an email to the group - please have a close look at it. Proposing a radical new feature for NP and am really curious about everybody's reaction.

Bug: Lack in ability to post new topics...my permissions (guess on my part due to the avatar) make me a news wrangler, but I can't post new topics? That seems silly.

Sure, you might want to lock people out of some sections -but surely you don't want to lock out the wranglers from "Wrangler Chatter", as that would defeat the purpose of the section. :)

Typo: in the profile box for favorite tags...

"Your Favorite tags are updated every time you add a tag to your favorites and you can remove ro edit them below."

Should be "or" not "ro" -at least I think so ;)

What is the deal with being locked out of posting new topic- being a newswrangler so far is a step down from being an editor, big time. Also, what is the deal with the flagging system? The only thing I can do is call something good stuff. Is this true for everyone, and if not, why not?

Good news = you finally have a hat...for a little while I was thinking I was the only cowboy at the party!

Still wondering about the topics/newsroom issue myself. Obviously it's a permissions issue, just wondering when it will be fixed.

Flagging system: I'm still a little confused on that too. I need to read an email I got from Mark (ANG) as I believe he did address it, but my memory is a little fuzzy right now. I was under the impression that the flags (good, fishy, incomplete, good member) were getting rolled out this week or at least all at once. However, just "good stuff" is available, which is available to everyone...just that wranglers get more "votes" than a general user.

You and I have the same rights and issues at the moment. I would assume that you can't edit the postings in the news budgets section either. If not, let Mark know so he can pass the word on to the dev team...as I know he would like us to be able to make changes to those postings when we have something to add.

I got the impression from Mark that the editors (not wranglers) will be in control of the negative flagging -at least for now.
