Ads on NowPublic

mtippett

If you’re reading this on February 7th, you’ll hopefully have noticed that NowPublic content is now ad-supported.

As you know we have survived to date in an ad-free environment but as we go from being a crazy idea that was once run out of my garage into a real news service we need to pay the bills. For now advertising seems to be one of the best ways to do it. In the very near future we plan on letting our contributors (hopefully that is you) participate in sharing ad revenue. We have some good ideas on how to do this but we’d love to hear yours too. Let us know what you think by posting your comments below.

Yours,

Michael.

Most people who have other web sites or blogs, also have Google Ad-Sense accounts.  Why not let contributors enter their Ad-Sense IDs and divide the profits of the ads with them?

It's easily arranged with Ad-sense and being done on other news contributor sites and works well.

Or, you could keep 100% of the ad revenue and pay contributors an ongoing unique-page-views-per-thousand amount - something like residuals for actors.  I'm sure you can find details on the Associated Content web pages, where it's currently implemented.

However, AC also pays their contributors for their articles but only those they deem to have a high "shelf life-expectancy" in the search engines - which of course are not news contributions - AC's focus is different.

And of course we don't mind, since news is our specialty here at NP. :)

Using the pay-per-newsworthy-articles system, would necessitate every single new article submitted to be evaluated by an editor or two or three daily, to ensure that all worthy contributors do get paid.  AC rejects many articles that don't meet their standards.

Swan has some good ideas.  Revenue sharing with adsence is a good idea and will keep ediors from having to evaluate every article.  What I do with my site is channels for each area of my web to see what is generating revenue.  So a channel could be called,  "politisite" and each month you could distribute a % of the generated revenue from adsence ads that appear on articles we write.  I know the traffic I bring here will not produce that much revenue as my one site gets 10-80K per day and only generates 10-30 Dollars with Adsence each day. So I don't expect to get rich from writing articles here.  I understand you have to pay the bills.  I stated my company 11 years ago. I tried to make money with just the content.  Reality set in quickly and we added ads to all of our sites.

I think more thought needs to go into ad election..

Find your love interest?!....Now that really lowers the tone.

Must be some good highbrow advertisters out there.

If you must have crap ads, please not flash so we can at least block them

cynisism in the face of professionalism - but I see the removal of those ads as recognition of my point.

Surely the NY Times and the Times of London would pay for ads here?

Geez, guys, all of my Google adsense ads have generated about 2 cents.

When do you get to pick the advertisers who actually pay you, rather than some other giant conglomerate who may or may not share it with you?

No TVnews or newspaper would go the route of adsense, especially when you never know what ad is going to show up, some could be x-rated.

If you are going to put ads on this site, please pick them yourself, not from some other site that might consider you a competitor and send the worst your (our) way. Get some ad salespeople and pay them a commission!

You can tell adsense what your site wants and dosn't want  Our company makes 1K a month but we have a couple of high traffic sites.  My politics site dosn't make much because my readers are there for one thing information.  They ignore the ads.  My Nascar site makes the money.  Please don't ask how I got a nascar site pleeez.  Like most discoverys, it was an accident.  Its amazing that a site I have little interest in makes me the most money.  I can also filter out competitors but I choose not to.

I for one think that we should at

least be able to vote on ads and let Now Public know what we think

about this digusting move. Ads are the problem with our culture and we
know it! This place looks like a joke now and people are thinking twice
about telling a friend about Now Public...  who wants to send your
friend or loved one to look at more fkn ads??  We know that sites
with ads are effectively censored as per the ad clients... We Know
This..   so Some of us are opposed to any site that pretends to be
free and sells us out at the same time...    we produced this
site and now we are selling all kinds of crap...  We are not here
to selll useless sht.   And we won't stay and watch you do
it....

 unsatisfied...

you?

Ads... nothing wrong with that. But being picky has its limits with advertisers. I think the correct balance is to get ads that pay the bills during the day and allow you to sleep well at night.  Of course, some that allow you laughs in the evenings with friends (and I am thinking of the Adsense "Find a Chinese Wife" ads here) may give a dash of irony that makes the whole deal easier to live with.

Hi

I think that it would be an excellent idea to pay the authors via PayPal.

I just wish you could pay in Euros, not dollars ;-)

Hey, sorry. I have actually made $2.20 with AdSense. and yes, I try to get targeted ads. but.....

The rotator at the top is the worst offender as far as getting the site to load.

Put the dam ads on the left. not the right. I hate it when my cursor accidently triggers one of those ads and it takes me off to another site in the same window, and that's usually when I'm trying to scroll.

Have they had any effect yet? I mean generated any actual cash. cuz it looks like one effect is members are offended. course many are just too polite to complain.

I often find when I am trying to use the video crowd sourcing function the ads are on top of the buttons I need to use and make it useless. Anything thats makes users more likely to click on ads is against Adsense rules. I am still having problems with the pages jumping back to the top of the page which has the affect of showing me the same ads again and again, I now wonder if that is the intention seeing as it has not been fixed.

Vinny, Ever notice when your trying to get breaking news us fast, you have to wait for the ads to post?  I asked that ads be removed for posting and editing but it must not be important minutes/seconds lost can cause NP to be 3-4th in google when we could have been 1st and drive more traffic, thus more revenue.  Its not my dime.

Hi Al, I have many problems with the editing the main one is the page jumping back to the top all the time. I know many members have commented on this problem over the last month or so, I have given up on it ever being fixed. What I do to work round the many problems when editing is just add a stub first post it quick then go back to adding more that way at least the breaking story gets up quick. There is no point in doing too much before the story is up and running because someone else will just post a copy and paste and beat you to it then all your work was a waste of time.

Let's not let this topic lose it's steam.  It's very important.

Revenue sharing should be in the future for some members.  Whatever stream you guys decide to run with please make sure it's an effective one.

"I have an idea that will make us all rich! Every time that a "Spammer"
posts an article on our website we charge him or her one dollar. There
are 10 million spammers out in the real world. So do the math - one
dollar times 10 million times 365 days - Seedplanter."

Seedplanter's idea should be saved for another time at best, but that's how we have to be thinking....

i think revenue sharing with the mebers is a good idea.

well people sitting in Now public H.Q.might not be having idea as how the members are collecting news and if you want more members to contribute some sort of incentive have to be given it is not necessary in form of cash, it can be an invitation to nowpublic centre in canada for three days so that they get in hand experience how things work their.i think nowpublic can dole out one or two airfares in a year for its dedicated members.

Also if you want more people to contribute the original stuff they should be given basic cost of covering the news like bus fare etc then will nowpublic become truly an international news portal.

Agree. I suggested those things, especially the trip to headquarters, months ago. Glad to see someone else considering the same thing.

I hate ads completely, I'm always surprised how successful they seem to be! Personally I never click on them and have developed an ability to mentally block out a section of a page when an ad appears.

I completely sympathise with the reasons for having them though, the site needs money to grow and become even better. I only signed up yesterday though and so far haven't noticed any!

One thing I would like is for them to be non obstrusive, that's all I wish for.
