When I arrive at the office most mornings I tend not to post, or hold posts back until the site is full of Canadians and American users, for me late afternoon/early evening because there doesn't seem to be enough people on the site to vote on my stories/other users stories to move them up in the rankings.
Don't get me wrong there is people on the site as you see comments box updating regular but no one seems to vote, and I'm not saying all of my stories should be ranked high, or be on the main page, but sometimes it clear what should be.
An example is yesterday when a 6 carriage long freight train comes along and crashes taking out powerlines to a small village, brings down a bridge, closing off a main road, the train itself carrying fuel, the smoke from the carriges closing a motorway (main highway) and the wreakage closing our main westcosts trainline, cutting off ayrshire to Glasgow, Scotland's biggest city.
I would say that's frontpage stuff, with NP being worldwide but it gets burried and the only reason it was seen yesterday on the frontpage was because I continued to press update until Paschen came online a couple of hours after me and voted on it.
It got to the front page after the only editor that seems to vote on stories around that time of day voted.
Paschen voting gives it 10 and it wasn't long after that when others voted but if it wasn't for editors with more votes that others it would have died. The only other editor online I can see in the morning here that votes is Sanjay Jha, but it was just after the time he normally disapears.
If Paschen didn't come on one morning then rankings wouldn't sort it's self out, I would need to wait until the lead stories from when the site was busy to die out and their 7 hours up on the frontpage. I would need to hope the breaking news posted by me or the other users online at that time makes it high with low voting.
I'm not American or Canadien and most of the front page stories don't intrest me but I don't have a problem with that, and understand there is a lot more American or Canadians out there and there is Scots, or Brits and those stories will dominate :)
Most American citys have more people in them than the whole of Scotland.
To round up I feel NP staff need to look into this GMT gap between 6am and 12pm because unless it major or breaking news that can't wait I won't post until afternoon when everyone else wakes up.
Does anyone else feel this, do you Pachen, out logging on times seem close.

Yea, it wasn't that bad yesterday once two editors recemended it, it became a top story, but it sat for a while and I believe if I was in the office when it broke and posted it at the time it broke it would have struggled.
They'll be times when it's okay, just reporting what I have noticed.

It's true that the site is definitely busier during the daytime hours here in Canada, but no matter what time of day it is anywhere in the world, we still want the best posts on our front page and we do strive to do that. Sometimes it's true we are not around, but that time is limited, but generally, just to let everyone know, during Sunday night to Friday morning PST, if it is outside the times of 8am to 7:30pm PST, it is best to send either Dave Keating or Sanjay a message if you want them to take a look at your story and they will respond as quickly as possible.
As a general rule, unless someone is ill or on holiday from Sunday night to Friday morning, Dave Keating works 12am to 6am PST and Sanjay works 8pm to 5am PST.
If it is a Saturday, message me; if it's a Sunday message Jordan.
Thanks.
